What is processed

Google Analytics may process the page URL and title, referring page, page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, and downloads, together with general browser, device, language, and approximate geographic information.

Google Analytics uses first-party identifiers such as _ga to distinguish browsers pseudonymously. We do not send names, email addresses, or account identifiers, and bird-sound playback is not recorded as a custom event.

Why it is used

The purpose is to understand traffic, find pages that are hard to discover, and improve the navigation, content, and performance of The Birds of Puerto Rico. It is not used to make decisions about individuals.

Analytics and storage

Google Analytics loads when you visit the atlas and uses first-party cookies to measure visits pseudonymously. These cookies may last for up to two years and their expiration may renew on later visits.

User-level event data is retained for 14 months; aggregate reports may be retained longer. You can clear cookies in your browser or use the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.

Google and infrastructure

Google acts as the analytics provider and processes data under its documentation and terms. Google Analytics does not log or store individual IP addresses. Cloudflare provides hosting and abuse protection and may create technical logs and strictly necessary cookies such as __cf_bm, independently of your analytics choice.

When you open profiles with photographs or sounds, your browser may also request media directly from iNaturalist Open Data on Amazon Web Services and Xeno-canto. Those providers receive the technical data needed to deliver the file, such as the IP address and request information.
